Colour plays an important role when conveying information on the internet. Our influenece by colour is deeply seated in our culture and gender.

The use of colour can have a powerful impact on our subconscious without our apparent knowledge.
What do you think of when I mention the Golden Arches? With the help of a colourful clown, where would the "Golden Arches" be (you know who I'm talking about) without their red background and yellow arches which also flow onto outfits and throughout the store and merchandise, completing their identity with the help of colours?
My recommendation for colour use would naturally be to go with the flow.
If you have a historical site, then earth tones might suit, with a medical site, being conservative with colors might seem appropriate. If you sell country items, then lots of heritage colors might apply. If you have a bridal website, soft pinks and pastels....you get the idea?
Colours can project a message of sorts about something. Imagine army guys hiding in the scrub wearing hot pink and I think you'll get the message!
Look at the top sites, particularly sites in your business type. What do you like or dislike about their layout and colour scheme?
Think about your audience carefully and use a layout and colour scheme to suit.
