The Price of Social Engagement

price of social

What is the price of Social Engagement?

Many people flock to social for personal & business use without a second thought.

But what is the price of social engagement?

Mental Health

Many are reporting they are literally sick of social media, but in the same breath say it’s awesome..

Loneliness doesn’t exist, a great way to de-stress, a love of new followers or more engagement, but negative affects on mental health are the topic of many social blogs.

Are the things we acknowledge but ignore, the price of social engagement?

Social Profiling

Many people and organisations tend to overlook or underestimate the threat introduced by engaging social media and using social media sites.

There is a huge blind spot, which includes the average person right up to enterprise business and government departments.

The fact that you’ve shared way too much on social media may be used for social profiling by potential employers and business partners, not to mention stalkers, criminals and hackers.

Social Media and Malware Distribution

High-traffic social media sites have become massive center’s for malware distribution and other kinds of criminal activity.

You might argue that if you join a social network, you probably are in for the “social” part. However,  to assert some sort of control and be aware of who has access to it requires a technical knowledge beyond most people’s comprehension.

If you see someone you do not know personally; this person, might be the one who is looking for ways to blackmail you or might be collecting information that would add the missing piece to an identity fraud scheme that is targeting you.

By giving up information and receiving likes, you may be opening the door for cybercriminals.

Infected by Social Media

The oldest & main type of infection is a worm.

A worm infection replicates and slows down a computer. It will use a machine as a host to scan and infect other computers.

This is a basic type of infection but much worse can, and is happening.

Social networks are heavily connected among friends, therefore malware writers may exploit the trust among the social network users to propagate malicious code.

The first active worm that hit online social networks was MySpace Samy worm in 2005. Starting with a single person, after 20 hours, the infectious profiles exceeded one million.

In 2008 a worm resurfaced infecting Facebook users.

There is no need for the attacker to deceive the victim to click on a specially crafted link.

Malware spreads delivering spam messages to people who are ‘friends’ of someone on the social network whose computer has already been infected.

One of the instances of such activity was reported in March 2010 when using festive-themed messages, dangerous malware was spread in Twitter. Later in September 2010, the malware has affected the millions of Twitter users including British Prime Minister.

1 in 5 business computers infected

In 2016 as many as 1 in 5 business computers are infected (see: https://www.pandasecurity.com/en/mediacenter/social-media/uh-oh-one-out-of-five-businesses-are-infected-by-malware-through-social-media/)

According to a report published by Panda Security in 2017, 117 million LinkedIn users’ security is at risk after the release of a list containing their email addresses and relative passwords.

There is much technical data online to support this (see: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/224110478_Malware_propagation Social_Networks).

I have repaired computers attacked with Ransomware that needed to be completely wiped to remove to make useable, thus losing ALL data.

There was one thing in common, all used social media..

You only need to remember one thing, fools rush in… and you can’t convince a fool of anything even when the truth is staring them in the face

I’m not saying you are a fool, but it is foolish to use social without understanding social is not about you.

Under the Influence..

“Influencers” and “kidfluencers” highlight the depth of the problem that people cannot objectively evaluate their level of competence.

If you use social sites, it’s more important than ever to have a strict system in place.

A firewall, anti-virus and backups of data to deal with anything that seems suspicious as it affects, compromises or infection hits you.

If you have anti-virus, regularly run a full scan. Be aware that virus can stop anti-virus from running or being affective.

In this case a full Operating System reinstall is required and hope your hardware (motherboard) isn’t infected.

One free program you may want to download and check your computer is Malwarebytes: https://www.malwarebytes.com
